COVID-19 update 23rd February 2021

Following the Government’s ‘roadmap’ announcement yesterday, I am delighted to confirm that Papworth Tennis Club will be open again from Monday 29 March. This means that recreational tennis can resume, including singles and doubles social play, 1:1 coaching and formally organised activity for groups, including group coaching (although the maximum group size is still subject to confirmation). However, because the Rule of 6 applies, we cannot restart Club Nights, as a formally organised group activity, until we receive further clarification from the LTA.

The Club Committee appreciates that all members suffered from limited playing time in 2020 due to the various Covid-19 restrictions. However, we hope that you will renew your Club membership for 2021, now we know that the restrictions will gradually be lifted, and we should be able to enjoy tennis again this year. Our Membership Secretary, John Peal, will shortly be in touch to advise you that, due to last year’s limited playing time, the Committee has decided not to increase fees for the coming season.

Club championship 2020

Massive thank you to John our coach for arranging this year’s annual championship held over several weekends in September.

The turnout for most events was great and the weather was really good except for the last day.

Well done to all who have taken part in this year’s event. We had some very competitive matches including a ladies single’s final that lasted a few hours.

The winners of this year’s championships are:

Ladies single: Malwina Paszylk

Men single: Nathan Paszylk

Ladies double: Sue Hoyland & Claire Lindsay

Mixed double: Diane Cobb & Steve Welburn

Men double: Stewart Gainey & Alex Jouvray

Court 4 extension

The patio extension on court 1 was completed last week as part of the new sports pavilion renovation.

The new area looks great and allows for much better use of the court especially when playing doubles.

Friendly tournament in September 2020

Dear Club Members,

We are pleased to offer Club members the opportunity to take part in some friendly tournaments kindly organised by our coach, John Garland, on Sunday mornings in September. Furthermore, if there are sufficient entries in any category for a healthy competition (ie at least a semi-final/final), the Club Committee will declare the tournament as the Club Championship for this season. The dates will be:

  •     6 September for Mens Singles and Ladies Singles, with finals on 13 September
  •     13 September for Ladies Doubles, with finals on 20 September
  •     20 September for Mens Doubles, with a final on 27 September
  •     27 September for Mixed Doubles, with a final on the same day

All Sunday morning sessions will start at 09:30 and aim to finish by 13:00.  If you would like to take part in these tournaments, please send an email to John using this e-mail address:

Please enter ASAP so that John will know the number of players attending, preferably up to 8 for the Singles competitions, and can organise a suitable format to give everyone some matches. For the Doubles competitions, please agree with your partner who is going to send the email to John so we don’t have duplicate entries! If anyone want to enter a doubles competition without a partner please state in the e-mail and we will do our best to pair people up.

If we have to cancel for bad weather on a Sunday morning, John will email competitors with a proposed alternative or we may have to abandon that tournament.

Please be aware that we will still be operating our Covid-19 precautions, so the Club will not be providing any refreshments – please bring everything you need to survive a morning’s tennis! We will not be awarding Club cups for the tournament winners, as their friendly tournaments, but I hope you’ll just enjoy the tennis!

COVID-19 update

COVID-19 update

The LTA have now issued some new guidance following the government’s easing of the lockdown which was announced in late May.

Singles and doubles is now allowed with members outside of your household, as long as you remain at least 2 metres apart as far as possible.

As social tennis is only allowed up to a maximum of 6 players, we can’t start our Monday and Wednesday Social nights. However, if individual members want to make a private arrangement to meet up, then this is allowed. This arrangement must only be for a maximum of 6 players and social distancing must still apply.

The full guidelines for Papworth Tennis can be found by clicking this link –> COVID easing JUNE 2020[1297]

Anyone not adhering to these guidelines and endangering the health of other members could have their membership terminated by the Club. This guidance may be reviewed and will change as national guidance is updated.
